The evolution of Radio Active’s weekly show named Gender Talk to one of the station’s most sought after programmes named Yaarivaru was indeed a metamorphosis. The process witnessed the sexual minority community (LGBT and sex workers) take a giant leap from the title of content generators to that of programme producers. The series of capacity building workshops conducted since July 2009 had enabled them to think big and since May 2010, the show is being conceptualized, produced, developed, hosted, and edited by the community members themselves.
Hosted by RJ Priyanka, the programme which is on air every Thursday from 12.00 to 12.30 pm, voices concerns related to the diverse issues faced by the community members—identity, education, unemployment, lack of housing facilities, social security, stigma and discrimination, sexual harassment, issues of homophobia, and criminalization of the community.
The Programme Committee, which meets religiously once every month, brainstorms on the programme’s, as well as the community’s, way forward in a holistic perspective. The last meeting was held on September 7, 2013; the next meeting is scheduled to be held on October 5, 2013. A zonal level survey has been undertaken to integrate and utilize mobile phone technology in its activities so as to connect better with the community members in and around Bangalore.
