In this special episode, RJ Usha speaks to Sangameshvara Matta, who manages the Khadi Gramodyog Vastragar.
The Khadi Gramodyog Vastragar has been one of the important places where the National Flag is produced. National flags produced at different spots come here first and from here are distributed to other places.
Still produced here are Khadi clothes, of course. Five to six tailors work at the Kumara Park East branch while around 20 tailors work at the Sunkadakatte branch to stitch the Khadi clothes. These workers are very particular about each yard of the Khadi material. Whatever pieces remain once the clothes have been stitched are reused to produce office files. Nothing goes waste here.
In spite of its legendary status, the Khadi Gramodyog Vastragar makes very little profit through the sale of the Khadi clothes, and now with the GST burden, the institution is in deep trouble. The workers have even protested against the bill and have been successful in securing a waiver of GST on all Khadi material.
