Beyond Affliction: APD Provides Support to Persons Living with Spinal Cord Injuries

In this episode of Beyond Affliction, RJ Usha speaks with Rubeyel Daniel, Assistant Director of Association of People with Disability; Umesh, Coordinator; and Praveen, Social Worker about Spinal Cord Injury. About 18 years back, they started work on the idea of engaging with people living in the aftermath of the injury. So far, they have identified 3,000 people with Spinal Cord Injury in Karnataka – in places like Mysore, Mandya, Ramnagara, Hassan and Tumkur. They have raised awareness on the subject and highlighted issues around it as well as on other parts of the body. They also make sure to share information on how to avoid this debilitating injury which makes a person completely immobile.

People with this injury live through great mental vulnerability as well. They are in need of constant motivation, rehabilitation, treatment, and therapy. The team has networked with 70 to 80 hospitals to reach out to these patients and provide them with the things they need. In Ramanagar, they have identified 180 people with spinal cord injuries and they are providing rehabilitation help to them.
