Poshan Maah Special: Anganwadi Workers and Post-natal Care in Karnataka

In this special episode dedicated to Rashtriya Poshan Maah, observed in the month of September throughout India, Sunitha from the Allalasandra Anganwadi and Jayashree from the Mathru Layout Anganwadi talk about Anganwadi services during the post-natal period.

Anganwadi services include providing care for pregnant women and also explaining to them the procedures to receive this care. Post-childbirth, the newborns can receive some governmental benefits – if it is a female child, then they can be registered under the Bhagya Lakshmi Yojanae. Under the Mathru Poorna Yojanae, six months’ worth of food is provided to a new mother – one-and-a-half months’ worth of food will be sent to their homes and later, the mothers have to go to the Anganwadi centre closest to them and receive the food.

Anganwadi workers provide important instructions to mothers about hygiene, vaccinations, and how important breast milk is and how it should be fed. The nutritional requirements of new mothers in the first six months after childbirth include vegetables, greens, and also fruits, all of which need a regular intake. In the first six months, a baby should not be given anything other than breast milk to consume.

Mothers must submit certain documents like their Aadhar Card’s copies as well as those of the father and the baby; the baby’s Birth Certificate; and the Ration Card’s copy to avail Mathru Shri Yojanae services.
